Unit combat resolves creatures and formations as units and tracks health directly in hit dice. It does not use the fine-grained hit-point damage track. Shared pool notation and attack resolution are defined in Dice-Pool Resolution.
Hit dice are a unit's health count. Removing one hit die represents 3.5 points of damage without rolling that fine-grained damage.
A multi-member unit combines the hit dice contributed by its members. A hero who joins the formation adds their effective hit dice to the unit total.
Resolve single and cluster attacks through the shared offense, defense, and effect sequence. Every cluster hit is independent; it receives its own defense and, if that defense fails, its own effect.
Convert an individual weapon's damage to unit Hit Dice from its average damage:
unit Hit Dice damage = round(average individual damage / 3.5)
Use a minimum of 1 Hit Die for a damaging hit. Round halves upward. Thus 1d4, 1d6, and 1d8 deal 1 Hit Die of unit damage, while 2d6, 1d10, and 1d12 deal 2 Hit Dice. The weapon keeps its exact listed dice in individual combat.
When another effect already lists hit-die damage, use that listed value directly. Each successful effect die against 4+ removes one unit hit die unless the effect states that its Hit Die damage is applied directly.
An area damage pool is a rate per five-by-five-foot area, not a flat total. It skips the offensive roll. Each exposed target contributes its individual base-size scaling, and every resulting exposure unit receives its own defense and possible effect roll.
For a multi-member unit:
unit exposure = number of members inside the area x each member's base-size scaling
A unit of four creatures on five-foot bases contributes four exposure units. A unit of four creatures on eight-foot bases contributes twelve. If only two of four five-foot-base members are exposed, the unit contributes two. Cover modifies a defense when it lies between the member and the area; a member completely outside the area contributes no exposure.
Ordinary unit pools use the nearest d6 threshold listed in Percentages and Pool Thresholds.
A notable individual operating as a one-model unit may use the unit procedure. A notable individual embedded in a unit may use d10 or d20 at an equivalent percentage threshold while ordinary members use d6s.
